“The Marvels” is flying to streaming. The Brie Larson-led sequel, which released in theaters in November, will become available to purchase/rent on Apple TV+ and Prime Video beginning Jan. 16, and on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb.13.
The digital and physical releases will feature exclusive bonus content including deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes and an audio commentary from co-writer/director Nia DaCosta and VFX Supervisor Tara DeMarco.
Considering the film’s poor box office performance —“The Marvels” is officially the lowest-grossing installment in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — its digital release will at least garner more viewers for the latest MCU installment. After hitting a meager $80 million in North America and $197 million globally at four weeks on the big screen, Disney stated that it wouldn’t continue reporting the weekend’s box office results any longer.

The action-adventure spotlights a trio of Spandexed heroes — Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel — who are tasked with saving the universe from forces that seek to destroy it. Reviews were mixed, but a bigger problem is that “The Marvels” ended up bearing the brunt of the audience’s burnout toward this ever-expanding franchise, one that spans the big and small screen. This year alone, Marvel has released two other movies and three Disney+ TV series.
Variety‘s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote that he felt overwhelmed by the film’s “MCU baggage.”
“The leaps in tone would be less jarring if ‘The Marvels’ weren’t so skittery and episodic,” he wrote in his review. “You can weave the plot together in your head, but you may have a harder time pretending to know why it matters — not within the metastasizing mythos of the MCU, but simply on its own.”
