The first film venture for producer David Susskind, writer Robert Alan Aurthur and director Martin Ritt is an auspicious bow. Trio, whose roots are in TV and legit, come up with a courageous, thought-provoking and exciting film.

Based on Aurthur’s [1955] teleplay, A Man Is Ten Feet Tall, it marks a milestone in the screen presentation of an American Negro.

The peculiar aspect of ed ge is that it is not a film dealing with the Negro problem. The protagonist is a guilt-ridden, psychologically mixed-up white youth, sensitively played by John Cassavetes. Plagued by the memory of his part in the accidental death of his brother and his inability to ‘belong’ either to his family or society, he AWOLs the army. He finds employment in a New York railroad yard where he immediately is befriended by a goodnatured, philosophical Negro lad (Sidney Poitier) and incurs the enmity of a vicious and tough hiring boss.

Filmed on location in New York, the film has a real-life flavor as it roams among New York’s railroad yards and upper Manhattan’s apartment house district.
